Thriller - the 1973-1976 TV Series - Reviews and Reflections

This blog aims to offer episode reviews and reflections on the excellent 1970's series Thriller created and almost wholly written by Brian Clemens. Ultimately all 43 episodes of the TV series will be reviewed and other pages will follow exploring other themes and interesting issues surrounding the show. These are all personal observations and if you have seen the show you may have very different views to mine on the episodes. However reviews are always useful in stimulating thought. If you haven't seen some of the episodes the reviews give you a flavour of what they entail but when you do come to see them you may draw very different conclusions - that is the beauty of watching TV or film or indeed exploring any creative work - there are no definitive answers but it's always fascinating to see what others think. The episode reviews don't contain "spoilers". While many readers will be very familiar with the episodes some won't have seen them so it is best "not to spoil the surprise".

Some comments will be made about the background and production of particular episodes or the series as a whole but this won't be explored in great depth. For such information in great depth and also with his own reviews you can explore Martin Marshall's splendid book A Thriller in Every Corner which can be obtained from Lulu Press.

  1. Wonderful to see this new blog dedicated to the episodes of Britain's most internationally successful genre anthology series, the brainchild of Brian 'The Avengers' Clemens. Really looking forward to the entries on the series as they appear!

    1. The real test of any show is if it's still appreciated decades later. The themes and fears Thriller explores are timeless so it's quite possible that even 50 years from now it will be enjoyed and talked about.

    2. Brian was certainly a master at universal, non-parochial themes in 'Thriller' and most of his other work. We are fortunate that the whole series survived from an era when this was not always the case especially with videotaped programmes - helped no doubt in no small part in proving so popular all around the world (from its earlies days right to the present)!

  3. Great idea to create a Thriller blog - this show is loved by so many, and occupies its own unique place in TV history. I never get tired of it - even after over 45 years since I first watched it!

    1. Yeah absolutely, a great companion/complementary piece to the DVD sets, websites dedicated to aspects of the the programme and the mammoth guide book to the show 'A THRILLER in Every Corner' from Lulu Books!

    2. It's good to see it's still appreciated. If a show is enjoyed at the time that's impressive and its prime function but the real skill lies in making something that is still enthralling viewers decades later.

  4. What are the top 5 for most people?
I have mine already listed and the 5 duds! I think most people hate the same episode particularly but... Who knows?

  5. It can be hard to produced top fives or worst fives (and in the latter even the worst Thriller episodes are still acceptable viewing). Sometimes tastes change over time and the episodes we most readily choose to watch may not always be objectively the best.
