1980s Repeats of Thriller on Grampian TV

Grampian - covering the North / North East of Scotland - was the joint-first ITV region to screen Thriller repeats when it showed Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are on 11th September 1980. It was one of the strongest ITV regions generally for Thriller repeats for the next year but then they became more sporadic and particularly infrequent after May 1982. Ultimately it seems to have finished six episodes short; generally the ITV stations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland showed fewer Thriller repeats.

Viewers in Grampian were the first to witness the bizarre new titles for Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are

Listing for Sleepwalker on Grampian that could easily be missed by viewers (and researchers!) as it was billed only by the movie title with no reference to Thriller

Thanks to Martin Marshall for some of these details including transmission times.

  1. The rare broadcast of a few 'Thriller' episodes on Wednesday nights on Grampian reflects the lack of taking 'Mid Week Sports Special', (compiled/networked by Thames and aired many weeks of the year after 'News at Ten' on that day), by the station. A similar situation existed for Scottish TV and Ulster, as 'Mid Week SS' focussed heavily on English based football and other similar sport. The English based stations (and I think HTV Wales) invariable took the network feed from Thames, this precluding 'Thriller' broadcasts on Wednesdays for them. Sport and special events aside, and the occasional high profile but 'adult rated' film (an example being Hitchcock's 'Frenzy'), post 'News at Ten' programming was invariably local and not networked.

  2. Those Wednesday repeats are unusual. By my reckoning there were only 10 repeats of Thriller on Wednesday nights - 7 of them in Scotland and Northern Ireland - with Grampian contributing 4 of them.
