1980s Repeats of Thriller on Granada

Granada often repeated Thriller in post-midnight slots - as per TV convention these are always listed as part of the previous evening's schedule (the new TV day generally not considered as starting until around 6.00 am). This was particularly so at the start and near the end of its repeats when Saturday night was the preferred slot with Monday pre-midnight screenings predominating inbetween. The only episode to depart from Monday or Saturday was Someone at the Top of the Stairs which featured post-midnight on a Friday in May 1982 as a late replacement for the film Oddjob.

Listing for Granada's last-ever broadcast of Thriller on 14.4.84. The renowned Wait Until Dark was screened shortly before - a film that may have influenced Thriller, particularly in how it depicted blindness

There is some uncertainty about which episode was screened on Saturday 25.2.84 with both national and local papers listing either Screamer or Terror From Within (by coincidence both starring Pamela Franklin so she certainly did appear that evening!) Screamer seems slightly more probable but the latter may have actually featured. Five episodes seem not to have been repeated; there have been suggestions that The Carnation Killer and Only a Scream Away were repeated in July 1981 and January / February 1984 respectively but there is no trace of either in any listings so if they were repeated it can only have been as very late-replacements.

Episode synopses were generally accurate although the one for Cry Terror! confused it with the 1958 film of the same name. Another for In the Steps of a Dead Man stated "an army deserter becomes an extortionist", a peculiar reading of events. A different listing for the same broadcast got round the synopsis problem by not having one but then gave an incongruous running-time of only fifty minutes (below)! The actual slot was an ample eighty minutes as was typical for Granada's Thriller repeats.

The end time should read 1.25 am

Many thanks to Martin Marshall for some of these details including transmission times

  1. An odd, erroneous listing for Granada - including in the regional 'TV Times' no less - occurred a week after their screening of Cry Terror! (itself miss-billed as a 50s movie as described). On 17.10.81, the movie 'A Story of Tutan-Khamen' was billed as 'Thriller' ... maybe generically bur confusingly so for viewers looking out for potential title changes of the series' 'movie format' broadcasts!
