The HTV region was split into two parts - Wales and West (covering areas of Western England such as Bristol and Somerset) with each able to repeat all the episodes of Thriller. However their repeat schedules are the most complicated of all because they sometimes broadcast the same episode of Thriller, other times screened different episodes and on others still only one region aired a repeat while the other broadcast different programming. Both were below average in their number of Thriller repeats - particularly Wales - although it is possible others appeared and will eventually be traced.

Doubt surrounds two repeats in particular. In The Steps of a Dead Man has also been credited for 25.10.82 (it was being aired by HTV West) rather than Death in Small Doses. The latter was listed by The Liverpool Echo which carried HTV listings as some of its readers lived in North Wales or could receive Wales broadcasts) and was rearranged from 23.7.82. It would seem odd (though not impossible) for a rearranged repeat to be listed in error. It's difficult to be sure what happened in these cases.
'Kiss Kiss Kill Kill' on 27 Sep 1981 could well be a classic case of a late replacement by a 'Thriller' episode of originally planned programming and consequently not billed in many listings. The HTV region 'TV Times' for that date indicates that 'Palmerstone USA' (an American import) was billed in that slot, following 'Winston Churchill The Wilderness Years' at 10.15-11.15, the preceding programme. Local press, printed much nearer the time of broadcast, may well have billed the change to 'Thriller'.
ReplyDeleteAlso, The Irish Times bills 'Dial a Deadly Number' for HTV Wales at the later date of 11 March 1983, the same date/slot of the HTV West transmission of the episode, therefore on 6 Sep 1982, Wales likely replaced that episode with another (or another programme altogether).
As to 'File It Under Fear' on 27 May 1983, the HTV 'TV Times' lists split programmes on Wales and West at 10-30-11pm of 'Portrait of a Legend' and 'A Question of Stars' followed by the movie 'Nickel Queen' at 11pm (Wales and West) until closedown, without any indication of 'Thriller'. Another possibility of late replacement programming on one sub-region? Seems more unlikely that 'Kiss Kiss Kill Kill' above?
"Kiss Kiss, Kill Kill" is only listed in The Daily Mirror which just lists HTV with no Wales / West distinction suggesting it was broadcast by both. Clearly there is always the possibility that the Mirror listing was wrong but I suspect not. The chief reason is Ian Kerr mentioned seeing it on HTV Wales on a Sunday in August 1981 - close enough to this date. Secondly it would be surprising to have a broadcast as early as 1981 cancelled and then never rescheduled - by either Wales or West.
ReplyDeleteI agree there is more doubt about the possible broadcast of "File It Under Fear" but once again it would seem odd if a cancelled transmission were not rescheduled. There does seem to have been a policy of rescheduling cancelled broadcasts rather than leaving them on the shelf. Ultimately the best evidence that any transmission did actually occur is from viewers' recollections - the example noted above one of the few where we have such corroboration.
Further to your point re Dial a Deadly Number, the Liverpool Echo also indicates a rearranged date of 11.3.83 and the repeat details above have been changed accordingly.
ReplyDeleteGreat. Very happy to chalk up 'Kiss Kiss Kill Kill' as an extra date/episode for HTV Wales - and it's in the same slot/schedule as the two following Sunday broadcasts which also works in its favour.
