ATV was the channel that commissioned Thriller back in the 1970s so it's maybe not surprising that it (and its successor channel Central from 1st January 1982) was one of only two channels that repeated all its episodes between 1980 and 1983 as well as the first to complete its quota.

And the presence of the re-titled 'Cry Terror!' and 'Mirror of Deception' (and others) early on in October 1980 prove that the British/PAL 'movie' versions were indeed ready by Autumn 1980 and screened from the start of the regional 80s repeats.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point that those new episode titles provide proof that it was the ITC movie version that was shown.
ReplyDeleteSome Australian repeat listings for the end months of 1980 were still showing the original titles, the 'movie' changes listed exclusively from the start of 1981 in that country (sometimes mid-run). Of course this might have been error in paperwork keeping the 'old' titles and the 'movie' began there in 1980 too.
ReplyDeleteWe known the 'movies' in Britain and Australia were not exactly the same as those prepared for North America from 1978, with only the new sequences 'converted' to British broadcast standards and married to otherwise UK content. So the UK/PAL 'movies' will have needed to been created - all 43 - only once the US material was completed.
From the UK repeat listings it appears that this WAS all complete by the autumn of 1980 and the start of the regional screenings. It may have taken until 1981 to ship these 'replacements' over to Australia.
